Sue's Horse Shiatsu

For happy, healthy horses. Gentle, whole‑horse treatments that help your horse move comfortably, perform confidently and feel their best.

Welcome

Equine Shiatsu: Gentle, whole‑horse bodywork

I'm Sue Mitchell, a qualified and insured equine shiatsu practitioner based in Midlothian, working with horses across Edinburgh, East & West Lothian and the Borders.

Shiatsu works with the whole horse to rebalance the body's systems, drawing on the principles of traditional oriental medicine to re-energise weak areas and reduce tension in the body. Shiatsu affects how physical systems in the body function, such as the nervous, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems, which supports the body’s natural self-healing abilities and promotes a sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

Each session is shaped around what your horse needs in that moment, using sensitive, mindful and quiet touch to move energy along the meridians combined with acupressure, fascia release, massage, gentle manipulations, rotations and stretches.

I work with horses of all types, from happy hackers to competition horses and ex‑racehorses. I'm called on for everything from stiffness and soreness to regular maintenance that keeps a horse performing at its best.

How I Work

A considered approach, tailored to your horse

Every session begins with a full assessment — no two treatments are ever quite the same.

Whole Horse Assessment

Every visit starts by looking at the whole horse — posture, movement and energy — to understand what's really going on, not just the obvious symptom.

Shiatsu & Fascia Work

Energy work along the meridians combined with gentle fascia release, massage, rotations and stretches, to ease tension and restore free movement.

Performance & Rehabilitation

Addressing tightness, pain and other problems, supporting recovery after injury or surgery, and regular maintenance sessions that help prevent illness and injury, and keep your horse performing at its best.

She was thin and quite closed off — now she's gained weight, gained muscle, and is growing in personality and confidence.

Helena Robson · Owner, Midlothian

Sue has been seeing my young ex-racer, Sutoo, regularly and I can really see the difference in my horse. She was thin and quite closed off and now she's gained weight, gained muscle and is growing in personality and confidence. Sue is so calm and gentle with her. It's fascinating to watch her relax away tensions and stiffness. I would definitely recommend Sue's Horse Shiatsu!

Helena Robson · Owner, Midlothian

We watched as he walked up the hardstand and my daughter exclaimed ‘Look how easily he’s moving, Mum!’ ‘That was a tight corner, too!’ There was honestly a lightness to him, that has been missing of late - thank you so much for releasing that! PS - Insulin levels have halved.

Pony with EMS and laminitis Owner, East Lothian

The tension in his neck, back and hindquarters is much less and he's moving better. He was easily doing transitions into canter for the first time when his rider rode him in the school. He's never gone so well before.

Elderly pony with rider sharers Owner, Midothian

Sue tailored Cristbal's sessions to take into account his early lack of handling. He quickly responded to her energy work and loved his sessions. I noticed that he stands more squarely in the stable now and is generally quieter and more relaxed.
